ARCH NEMESIS / Of Mind And Fantasy / Face Front
by: JEREMY JULIANO www.metalexpressradio.com
The second full length album from Arch Nemesis, Of Mind and Fantasy, is a haunting, hard-charging juggernaut of a disk that displays the dynamic sounds of Medieval Metal with a flair for the unexpected. Beginning with the opening track ,“Before the Shadows Came,” we are set upon the epic tales of folklore that one would expect from these Old World Europeans. The song starts with a great staccato guitar riff and vocal melody that develops into a strong melodic verse and then into the larger than life chorus. Lead vocalist Niclas Thomsen creates a sense of drama with his operatic styling and then really gives the song some texture by adding some crunching Death Metal growls within the song. This tale of heroes and villains plays out like a good novel; starting with a build up and then a sense of climatic suspense and finally the epilogue. Following suit, songs like “Dream,” ”Master of Darkness,” and “Northern Lights” are strong Power Metal tunes rooted in Classic Metal themes. These songs are thick with riffing guitars, shredding solos, and thundering drums, all the while Niclas’s vocals are sweeping and screeching throughout. Together, they create a dark crescendo of trepidation. But what really creates a sense of depth to the disk are songs like “Hunger and the Darkness,” which starts slow and gravelly, reminiscent of early Savatage, and the very beautiful “Little Child,” which captures a dreamy Enya-meets-Evanesence kind of sound. With all of the thrash and speed riffs, these slower numbers really stand out; not only because of the tempo change, but for the fact that the songs are so well done. They craft a real sense of dynamics and give the band a much broader sound. Adding guest vocalist “Silwer” also creates yet another dimension, as her vocals add even more texture and layering to the overall sound of the album. It is albums like Of Mind and Fantasy that sneak into your normal play-list when you think you have heard it all before. At first glance, it's just another tale of the dark journey into woe set forth by another Power Metal band. Soon, though, you find the journey to be surprisingly new and full of fresh ideas with a strong presentation and attention to detail. Adding the second venture from Arch Nemesis to your collection could be a real strong choice for your most surprising CD of the year. |

Fatnasy - review by Yj -
www.heavynetal.no FaceFront (Out now!) Before The Shadows Came 2. I Dream (therefore I am?) 3. Hunger and the Darkness 4. Judgement Day 5. Little Child 6. of Mind and Fantasy 7. Master of Darkness 8. A tale of the Ocean 9. Bonustrack - Northern Lights anno 2004 |

Genre: Power Metal
I was pretty impressed by the vocal performance of a certain Nesmoth on DIMENSION F3H's debut "Reaping The World Winds". What that has to do with ARCH NEMESIS? Well, this Nesmoth apparently calls himself Nesmoht and normally sings with just those ARCH NEMESIS. Now I of course wanted to hear this band, interested in how the gentlemen normally sounds like (and the band, of course, too), but where to get it and not steal (apart from the fact that I could not find it anywhere, so that stealing was out of the question from the get go)? There suddenly fate turned its face on me in form of Thomas Hansen, by now member of the "The Metal Observer" Brotherhood in Norway, who had been in the army with exactly that certain Nesmoht. Funny how life sometimes goes... Looking at the booklet it becomes clear quite quickly, where Niclas Thomsen, so the name of the gentleman, got his pseudonym from (just read his family name backwards...), but anyway. At the mentioning of the name ARCH NEMESIS and looking at the pseudonyms I had rather expected Black Metal to snow in from Norway, but I had been really wrong about this for these five guys from Kristiansand have nothing to do with Nordic cold. To describe their sound is a challenge for its own, because you cannot really nail the Norwegians into one style only, with elements from Power Metal and also some Progressive Metal in there, without really closely belonging to either of them. From opening "Forever" on ARCH NEMESIS deliver their explosive cocktail, rather mid-paced, but also with sudden speed bursts, driving double bass and an outstanding vocal performance by Nesmoht, great beginning, but by far not all yet! "Fatal Victory" follows, epic with strong guitars, great calm breakdown in the middle, with very expressive vocals, but also double bass, very well arranged and variably structured. "Illusions" then bears some more Power Metallish EVERGREY in its atmosphere and Nesmoht once more shines (just listen to how long he can hold this tone towards the end, incredible!). *catching breath* And it continues: "Northern Light" - musically as lyrically very epic, with big keyboards, then right after "Nemesis", very Power Metal, more driving with great chorus and vocals, wow! "The Huntress" then shows a more progressive side of ARCH NEMESIS, not as accessible anymore, but this multi layered canon part in the middle is damn strong, just like the cool guitars towards the end. The title track then brings us driving, absolutely cliché free Power Metal over an atmospheric keyboard background, damn catchy, but never even remotely shallow and in the middle, when Nesmoht whispers "Shadows, Shadows" and then sings "in the mirror", the whole thing reminds me of SOLITUDE AETURNUS somehow, just there, still cool! Closing "After Forever" then is almost pure dark Power Metal with driving double bass and strong melodies, also a strong ending to the CD. Altogether the production at times cannot fully convince, is a but unbalanced, here the keyboards push to the fore too much, there the vocals are mixed a bit too low, but apart from that I can only say that ARCH NEMESIS have managed to create an album with "Shadows In The Mirror" that stands on remarkably own feet. Basically you could put the Norwegians into the Power Metal category in the end, but they are darker, at times a bit more progressive, not using choirs and through that alone they differ from the majority of their colleagues. Additionally they have a truly outstanding singer in Nesmoht, who is able to give the songs the last bit, very strong performance. On my search for comparable bands I find a bit of EVERGREY here, a little SAGITTARIUS there and then a squirt of PAGAN'S MIND around the corner, but you cannot use them as comparisons as ARCH NEMESIS after all sound completely different again. No matter what, who feels attracted by the above mentioned sound mix and also can see beyond those minor sound flaws will be truly rewarded with "Shadows In The Mirror". And Kristiansand must have something in the water, PAGAN'S MIND, DIMENSION F3H, ARCH NEMESIS... (Online November 14, 2003) |

ARCH
NEMESIS |

ARCH NEMESIS - Shadows in the miror (Edgerunner Records) - 05/11/2002 @ 10h16 J'en tiens un !

Arch Nemesis - Shadows in the mirror Arch Nemesis and their debut album “ Shadows in the Mirror” were a surprise since the beginning. though Arch Nemesis possesses a great production of a notable label and a good musical quality, even we can consider them like a underground band and as such cannot leave indifferent to nobody. Personally as public and critical, “Shadows in the Mirror” a serious job , with a great effort and talent and besides all, many entusiasm, that are transmitted through the music. Turning to the album, “Shadows in the Mirror” possesses innumerable elements that do it to be a notable production; first that all, very good songs and compositions in a complex and very progressive style; Undoubtedly with a Evergrey influences. Regarding the songs personally I emphasize Fatal Victory, Illusions and Afterforever, mainly by being more melodic and “ordered”. Without stop doing to note some points that seem low in the album, as the drums sound (very low) and some choruses lack in harmony. All in all a good album , mainly by this “novel” sound. Claudio |

Arch nemesis -

ARCH
NEMESIS,

Alt i alt vil

tombstone This is the debut album of this Norwegian band and their music has influences from classic metal and few extreme metal influences, while there are also some folk elements in their sound (very few though). The album left me with a bitter sweet taste after I heard it a few times. Some songs are good while others are not good. There are some interesting parts but there’s an equal number of indifferent parts as well. Nothing really special. Just another debut by another band that has the talent and the potential to become better, but their present album leaves a lot to be desired and it doesn’t manage to deliver. The production is another thing that needs a lot of improvement since the sound is not so good. Some people might find the CD interesting, depending on their personal taste of course, but I think that the majority will agree with me. We can live without it and we don’t recommend the album.
